( Writings from : zjut_tw ) Five volunteers from the ZJUTers, are teaching Chinese in the Confucius Institute of the University of Ghana. They flew across oceans to reach the other side of the Earth. The honorable journey of teaching abroad began with their love of Chinese culture, the passion for volunteer service and the zeal for the African land. They are committed to be ambassadors of the Chinese culture, and their presence represents the whole Chinese majority.Their one year voluntary service in Africa created an unforgettable experience of their lives. -----------------------------------------------------------------  1  ----------------------------------------------------------------- Qipeng Sun, a postgraduate student majoring in Chinese Language & Literature in the ZJUT College of Humanities, volunteered for this post in Sep 2015, and this year is going to be his second year.“I unprecedentedly realized that the blood of Chinese nation is flowing in every blood-vessel of mine”, said Qipeng Sun.“I still remember the day I arrived in Ghana, It was Sep 9th 2015.It’s a real lovely land, with a quiet and peaceful life, fresh air, azure sky and navy-blue sea. What touched me most are an unsophisticated people. A waiter at the night fair, who knew that I love eating chicken, would always provide me with some extra vegetables for free. Some Ghanaian strangers would give me a lift in the heavy rain. There is Chinese mother who shared with me about the tender care which was always given to her child by a Ghanaian babysitter, as well as the greetings and smiles she received from the society,” continued Qipeng Sun. -----------------------------------------------------------------  2  ----------------------------------------------------------------- Lina Wang, a graduate from the collaborative innovation center of Yangtze River delta region green pharmaceuticals of ZJUT, also volunteered for this post in Sep 2015, and this year is going to be her second year.“Challenges and sense of achievement can be brought by this volunteer experience”, said Lina Wang.“I’ve been Ghana for more than one year. Compared with the first year, this year has put a reassuring arm on me.Besides, there are a number of activities, such as “Chinese Bridge (Chinese contest)”, spring festival activities, HSK test, Confucius Institute Day. It is said that every teacher is an excellent actor (or actress) and a great orator, but this is far from an excellent Chinese teacher. To spread our traditional culture,we improve our skills of singing, dancing, martial arts, Beijing opera and so on”, she added. -----------------------------------------------------------------  3  -----------------------------------------------------------------     Jingying Ni, a graduate student majoring in Chinese Language & Literature at the College of Humanities in Zhejiang college of ZJUT. She volunteered for this post in Aug 2016, and this year is going to be her second year.“The stuff of Confucius institute of the University of Ghana, especially the head of the institute gives us great support in our daily lives. It is mutual aid, solidarity, and friendship that makes our African lives so wonderful. It is a sacred mission for the Confucius institute of the University of Ghana to spread the Chinese culture. And we, as volunteers, still have a long way to go. That means classroom teaching is not enough. It is essential to make it penetrate into every bit of our lives. In the short three years, Confucius institute of the University of Ghana has received an honorary title of “the exemplar Confucius institute”, which demonstrates the university’s special and volunteer teachers’ hardy spirit. On the other side of the earth stands our Alma Mater--ZJUT.Each ZJUTer was encouraged by the university motto “hou-de-jian-xing (which means profound accomplishment and invigorating practice)”. We are honored to be volunteers serving as Chinese teachers in Ghana. With high aspirations, we need to be earnest and down to earth” reported Jingying Ni. -----------------------------------------------------------------  4  ----------------------------------------------------------------- Yafang Xia, a graduate of 2015 from the College of Humanities of the ZJUT. “A high sense of honor and mission struck me here”, said he.“Soon after I arrived here, the 14th Chinese Bridge-Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students was held. There were four competitors from Confucius Institute of the University of Ghana. Great responsibility fell on my shoulders that, as a teacher for the first time, I had to give them instructions on, say, their speeches and talent shows. For example, I had to revise their speech drafts. A high sense of honor and mission struck me at that moment when my students were confidently delivering their speeches on the stage”. Yafang Xia reported. -----------------------------------------------------------------  5  ----------------------------------------------------------------- Lili Liu, a full-time teacher in teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL) from International College of the ZJUT.“Only those who have truly lived here can enjoy Ghana’s uniqueness. For those who have ever been here, throughout their life, there’ll be a trace of the “African Blue” never fading way, as well as gorgeous trees, jolly birds, friendly and optimistic Ghanaian. And for my part, the thing I cherish most is the fruit in Ghana.” Lili Liu also reported. -----------------------------------------------------------------  END  -----------------------------------------------------------------   It is a personal choice, but the fervent teachers of the ZJUT jointly entertained; it is a personal experience, but a common story we shared. There are not only the cross-border concerns between us but the cross-cultural communication with deeply-felt emotions. How can we get to know the truth of those we’ve learnt through heresy without personal experience? We need such an experience to volunteer in it, as these ZJUT teachers, full of enthusiasm, touched by the details of every moment spent there. As you can see in their introductions above, they love their career, they love education and they love international education. In this way they have an access to spreading their profound knowledge, as well as experiencing foreign cultures.  Confucius Institute of the University of Ghana   Confucius Institute of the University of Ghana, under the cooperation of the ZJUT and the University of Ghana is the only Confucius Institute established in Ghana. It opened in May, 2013 and began to run formally in April, 2014. Confucius Institute is dedicated to teaching Chinese, disseminating Chinese culture, and boosting the friendship between the two countries.   Confucius Institute, a cultural communication institute set up around the world by Office of Chinese Language Council International, is aimed to promote Chinese and disseminate Chinese culture as well as the education on Chinese traditional culture. As a non-profit educational institute, the aim of Confucius Institute is to promote understanding of Chinese and Chinese culture, develop friendly relations with other countries, and make contributions in building a harmonious world. Confucius Institute of the University of Ghana, the second Confucius Institute undertook by ZJUT (the first Confucius Institute was cooperated by ZJUT and Valparaiso University in Indiana state, America), was established in May 2013. The first cooperation between ZJUT and Ghana University can date back to 2009. Since cooperative relationship was formally established, these two universities exchanged ideas in the aspect of Chinese teachers and students majoring in Chinese, which lay a solid foundation to their cooperation. After being approved by the office of Chinese Language Council International (known colloquially as Hanban), the Confucius Institute of the University of Ghana was established, with various kinds of teaching activities and Chinese culture exposing activities, aiming to make it as the center of spreading Chinese culture in Ghana.
