Figure A Story of an Excellent PhD Student who studies in ZJUT

Words from Supervisor, Dr. Mi Yan

Mr. Dwi Hantoko is my first foreign PhD student. Actually, before his admission in ZJUT, he was a visiting student in my group. During his three months stay, his activities was impressive, he did like a full time student for his experiment. So I accepted his application for PhD study, and supplied scholarship for him. In the past three years, he worked hard for his academic work, and get fruitful achievement in publication and awards. Besides his personal research, he also was willing to learn more about industrial technology to attend workshop, train his leadership and ability to assist international symposium organization, establish friendship with lab members to supply favor for others. I always told him ‘do not worry future, if you work hard today’. Now, he already successfully finished his graduation defense, I would like tell him ‘Congratulation, no matter what do you do in future, I will bless you for your health and happiness, and hope you to be a person good for society’.

Story of Dwi Hantoko

Hi, I am Dwi Hantoko from Indonesia. My major is Chemical Process Equipment in Mechanical Engineering College, Zhejiang University of Technology. At this moment, I would like to share my experience during my stay in China.

I first came to the Zhejiang University of Technology in 2016 as a visiting student from Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia and worked in Professor Mi Yan’s lab. I was doing research on biomass to solid fuel conversion. There were still a few students under Professor Mi Yan’s supervision at that moment. But, I believe that his lab will be developed better and better in the near future.  At the beginning of 2017, I have decided to pursue my doctoral degree in his group and started my new life as a doctoral student. I was trying to survive in Hangzhou with different languages, new cultural and culinary, and new living styles. I realized that all are amazing, enjoyable, and unforgettable.

As the main task for the doctoral program is conducting research, I started to learn solid waste management and waste disposal technologies together with my lab mates since the research in this lab focuses on solid waste treatments. I was very grateful that I have received many opportunities to attend many national and international forums, thus I could learn how do they conduct research, how do they solve their research problems, and how do they maintain the quality of research.

Also, I am thankful for the chance to visit many waste-to-energy industries in China, I got a lot of experiences on the development of waste disposal technologies, the challenges during technology implementation, and etc. Moreover, I also learned a lot about the work ethic of Chinese scholars who work very hard and persistent to achieve significant result.

Finally, I could finish my doctoral degree in May 2020. I do hope that all skills, experience, and knowledge that I have obtained during my stay in China will be useful for my future carrier. I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to my supervisors for their patience, support, and guidance during my study. Last, but not least, thanks for the continuous support and encouragement from my beloved families.
