Friends from Messiah College/two-week cross-culture tour at ZJUT
Time:  2016-06-14

Friends from Messiah College were given a remarkable tour in Hangzhou and this tour lasted for two weeks. Here are some of our shared memories. It was in the afternoon of May 30th that our friends finally arrived at ZJUT. After a good rest, they greeted Chinese fellows on Tuesday, triggering off a bunch of amazing experiences and we, in turn, showed them our magnificent campus. On Wednesday morning, a Chinese class was offered, hoping to plant a general impression of Chinese culture. Later in the afternoon, Mr. Yang presented authentic Chinese calligraphy to our friends and in high spirits they all showed youthful enthusiasm for the usage of the writing brush.   On Thursday morning, our foreign friends took their second Chinese class and deepened their understanding of Chinese culture. In the afternoon, together we visited WANGXINGJI fan factory and deeply experienced the whole process of making a fan.     We spent our lovely Saturday in Wuzhen(乌镇), a tour spot where folk customs enjoyed great reputation and reflected the lifestyle of people living in jiangnan Water town, south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. All of us enjoyed the scenery on Saturday. On Sunday, we walked along Hefang Street(河坊街), which was known as the Snack Street because of the diversity of the food there. Our friends tried local cuisines and felt as if they were just in a scene from the famous documentary, A Bite of China(舌尖上的中国). As for the second week, still, there were always novelties awaiting. On Monday morning, our friends attended a lecture discussing the differences between China and the United States. In the afternoon, we learned taijiquan, a kind of traditional Chinese shadow boxing.   On Tuesday morning, we had an unforgettable boat trip on the West Lake and enjoyed the landscape that they had never seen before. In the afternoon, we visited picturesque Longjing village(龙井村), a wonderful place to have a taste of green tea. What’s more, the visit to Song Town(宋城) later at night was another great excitement.     On Wednesday morning, our friends took another Chinese class and after that, they were offered a chance to learn how to play the traditional Chinese instrument, zheng, a plucked instrument that has 21 or 25 strings and in some ways similar to the zither.   On Thursday morning, a ping-pong lesson challenged some of us and at the same time brought us high spirits. In the afternoon, those foreign friends were taken to the mess hall and were taught how to make traditional Chinese rice-pudding(粽子). Our friends were quite interests in it and they even said that they might make dumplings for their parents after returning home.   After their last Chinese lesson on Friday morning, we Zjuters held a farewell meeting in their honor in the Faculty Development Center.   We sent our honored friends to the airport and bid farewell to them on Saturday morning. As the hosts, we were very pleased to know that they appreciated their experience meeting us in Hangzhou, an impressive city and we were willing to show our unique Chinese culture that we were very proud of to more foreign friends. Welcome to ZJUT!
