China Opera’s Special Performance Held at ZJUT --- The 2014 “Elegant Art Entering the Campus” Program

On the evening of
March 25th, the China Opera presented its special performance Confucius in the Students and Staff
Activity Centre in Zhaohui Campus. This is one part of the “Elegant Art
Entering the Campus” program. Over a thousand of teachers and students have
been attracted to enjoy this art feast.
This original dance drama was written and
directed by Kong Dexin, an outstanding young artist. Around one hundred people
participants took part in this latest Chinese national dance drama. The whole
performance was divided into several parts: the [prologue: question], [time of turmoil],
[starvation], [great harmony], [dying of Ren],
[epilogue: Yue]. In the drama, the fatuous,
lascivious monarch ignores Confucius; treacherous courtiers intrigue against
each other; while Confucius remonstrates but fails to pursue implementation of Li and Ren. By means of solo, trio and group dances, this performance
expressed Confucius’ disappointment towards Ceremony Disintegration, his concern
about the common people, and also his optimism in dilemmas, struggle against
tyranny. Moreover, the drama showed his great care for students, expectation of
a harmonious society together with his humanistic determination to education. All
of these were integrated together to produce the soul dance drama. The graceful
dancing and the grand visual and sound effect, combined with the rich stage
image, perfectly presented the thoughts and emotions of Confucius. The
performance shaped Confucius as an ordinary mortal rather than a saint. His
persistence, his journey and attitudes in dilemmas are all worth our deep
thinking. The performance demonstrated the wisdom of Confucius and the charm of
Confucianism. It showed the unique nationality and the profound cultural
connotation ofChina.
[Epilogue: Yue] pushed the performance to the climax. The audience
applauded for a long time, expressing their highest respect for art.
The program of “Elegant Art
Entering the Campus” were conjointly started and organized by the Ministry of
Education, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance 8 years ago. It
aims at leading and promoting the university culture, improving aesthetic
knowledge and cultural quality of students, and boosting their all-round
development. This performance was hosted by the Youth League Committee of ZJUT
and co-sponsored by the Associations’ Union of ZJUT.
